A nice yard is great. Spending every weekend looking after it? Not so much.

You’re mowing the grass. You’re pulling weeds. You’re watering plants. You’re just trying to keep everything looking tidy. With all of this, it’s easy for yard maintenance to take up more time than you’d like. In hotter areas, keeping a lawn green could be even more work.

The good news is, you don’t need to completely change your yard to make It easier to manage. A few fairly simple changes will cut down on the work while still leaving you with an outdoor space you enjoy.

Keep reading on to learn more.

1. Reduce or Replace the Lawn Area

Begin by looking at how much lawn you actually need.

Grass takes a surprising amount of work. It needs mowing. It needs watering. And it definitely needs regular attention if you want it to stay healthy. Reducing the amount of lawn means there’s simply less to look after.

You don’t have to get rid of all of it. Keep some grass. This is good if you have children, pets, or just want to relax. You might even consider replacing the rest with something else, like:

  • Planting beds,
  • Paving,
  • Gravel,
  • Or another lower-maintenance option.

For homeowners in Dallas, for example, synthetic grass is also worth considering. Hot and dry weather makes natural grass particularly demanding, so synthetic turf DFW is a good option. It keeps a green-looking yard without the same level of watering and/or mowing.

The idea is pretty simple:

Keep the parts of the lawn you actually use and make the rest of the yard work harder for you.

2. Install Drip Irrigation

Next, make watering your plants easier.

If you’re walking around the yard with a hose every few days, then you’re doing too much work. And that’s far more than you really need to. Drip irrigation sends water directly to the base of your plants, so you can give them what they need without watering the entire area.

It’s especially useful for flower beds, shrubs, and vegetable gardens.

You could also connect the system to a timer. That way, the plants get watered on a regular schedule – and you don’t have to remind yourself to do it.

The main benefit, though? It’s convenient. But it’ll also help you avoid wasting water on paths, patios, and other areas that don’t require watering.

3. Add a Thick Layer of Mulch

Finally, give your soil a little extra protection.

Add a good layer of mulch around your plants. This helps the soil hold onto moisture for longer. That means less frequent watering. It also makes it harder for weeds to appear, so you’ll spend less time pulling them out.

Various materials work well – bark, wood chips, other types of organic mulch. What you choose will depend on the plants and the look you’re after.

Spread the mulch. Do so around the base of your plants, but don’t pile it directly against their stems or tree trunks. A little space will prevent moisture from building up where it shouldn’t – and too much moisture would attract pests.

It’s a small job. However, once the mulch is down, it keeps doing its job for quite a while.

To conclude, yards cannot be zero maintenance. But you can achieve a low-maintenance space with a few simple changes. Use the tips outlined above to do just that.
