The Legendary Style of Jeans: the Bell Bottom

Some styles are well known for going in and out of fashion. Ripped jeans, cords, puffed sleeves, and padded shoulders, are just some of the items that continue to revolve on the roundabout of designer trends.

One of the most iconic fashion statements of the last century, bell-bottom jeans, is no stranger to these fickle trends. However, recent years have seen an upturn in its popularity, as this classic item finds favour amongst today’s style conscious buyers.

The origins of a classic

Bell bottoms, also known as flared jeans, date back to the 19th century, where they were worn by American and British sailors who favoured their practicality. The British Royal Navy ultimately adopted the functional style into their naval uniform.

It wasn’t until the 1960’s however, that the bell bottom jean first appeared on the scene as an item of fashion. Throughout the late 1960s and 70s, the jean became a symbol of freedom and rebellion, and was associated with the hippie movement and anti-establishment protest.

The style became more popular in the 70s when famous celebrities started to wear bell bottom jeans.  Singers Sonny and Cher were big fans of the jean, while Mick Jagger, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton all helped increase their appeal. Arguably, it wasn’t until 1977 and the worldwide success of the movie “Saturday Night Fever” starring John Travolta, that the bell bottom jean truly hit the attention of the mainstream.

Over the intervening years, the bell bottom has been reinvented multiple times, resulting in the modern style jean that we see on the hight street today. Modern fabrics and a variety of styling options, make this versatile jean an essential part of any fashion-conscious wardrobe.

Todays’ celebrity fans

Famous names who are signed up to the bell bottom trend include, Emily Ratajkowski, Gigi Hadid, Jessica Alba, Elle Fanning, Kourtney Kardashian, and Vanessa Hudgens.

When it comes to male celebrities, Harry Styles can take a lot of credit for bringing men’s bell-bottom jeans to the attention of a modern male audience. In 2019, the singer hit the town in a pair of dark blue flared jeans, tasselled loafers, and a classic red V-neck sweater, and singlehandedly declared bell bottoms back in vogue.

The modern bell bottom

With fabrics and technology more advanced than ever before, modern denim jeans have a wide range of fits available, including high, mid, and low-rise waists. There are also numerous colourways and fabrics available, which means there’s sure to be a pair out there that complements you.

The great thing about bell bottom jeans, is that they provide a leg balancing shape which gives the illusion of longer legs. Because the eye is naturally drawn down the trouser leg, it also lengthens your silhouette. The flared bottom also helps balance out certain body shapes, such as pear shapes and wider shoulders.

Versatility

One of the main reasons these classic jeans remain a core part of any wardrobe, is their versatility. They can be easily worn as part of a casual day time look, or dressed up for a night out on the town. The complimentary silhouette of the trouser leg adds a touch of stylishness to any outfit, and look great with a tailored blazer for more formal occasions.

Styling

The key to wearing bell bottom jeans is proportions. Avoid loose fitting tops, instead, consider a fitted top to balance out the flared silhouette. The length of the trouser should also inform your choice of footwear, with boots sneakers or a smart formal shoe all great options depending on the occasion.

Accessorizing

Often overlooked, accessories are the key to any successful look, and bell bottoms are no different. Belts, hats, and bags are therefore all key elements of any outfit. Consider vintage items as nod to bell bottom origins, but don’t be afraid to experiment in order to find a style you’re comfortable with.
